Canada’s capital provides many places to reflect on our past. Visit the National War Memorial, the tomb of the unknown soldier, and the National Aboriginal Veterans Monument, all steps away from Parliament Hill, or attend the moving Remembrance day ceremony on November 11th. A great place to visit at any time of year, the Canadian War Museum provides an educational and informative look into Canada’s rich military past. Take a moment to reflect in Memorial Hall, and then explore multiple exhibits and learn about Canada’s role in past conflicts around the world. There is free admission and special programming on November 11th.

Across the street from the Canadian War Museum, the National Holocaust Monument, entitled Landscape of Loss, Memory and Survival, is a striking monument commemorating the lives lost during the Holocaust, and the contribution Holocaust survivors have made to Canada. We recommend a visit in the evening or at night, as the structure is beautifully lit, providing a hauntingly beautiful place to reflect and remember.

Every year from late October until November 11th, the Royal Canadian Legion Poppy Drop takes place on Parliament Hill and the Senate of Canada building. Watch as 117,000 Poppies cascade down the buildings, representing Fallen Canadian Veterans; a truly beautiful sight to behold.

Take a Tour of Ottawa’s Parliament or Senate

In 2018 the Parliament of Canada’s West Block and Senate of Canada buildings reopened to the public after underdoing some transformational renovations. These brilliant architectural spaces are open for free public tours daily, which can be booked online in advance. The Senate of Canada building is especially impressive, built in a former rail station with stunning architecture and a unique history dating back to 1909. Book your tickets here.

Hike at Mer Bleue Bog

With one of the most extensive trail networks in the region, Ottawa is a great place to get outside in any season. While some trails are best during the peak fall or summer seasons, Mer Bleue Bog is an ideal spot for a November hike. In early November you may catch the tail end of the Tamarack’s changing colour, painting the 7700-year-old bog into to a brilliant gold canvas. The interpretative boardwalk trail is an easy and accessible 1.2km hike, and is open year-round; so a dusting (or dumping) of snow will not take away from this peaceful outing in nature.

You’ll find staples like maple syrup, honey, coffee, baked goods, indoor plants and harvest vegetables, and some seasonal décor, gifts and wreaths in the months leading up to Christmas.

Get Inspired at one of Ottawa’s Art Galleries

While November weather can often lack pizzazz, Ottawa’s beautiful art galleries provide peaceful and colourful spaces to get inspired. The National Gallery of Canada with its awe-inspiring architecture and variety of art is a must for art lovers. Don’t miss the Indigenous Galleries, Water court, Garden Court, Rideau Chapel, and the stunning Great Hall.

The Ottawa Art Gallery, located in downtown Ottawa is a wonderful place to get a taste of local and Canadian art.
